Abstract
Olefines, having a hydrocarbon group of at least two carbon atoms attached to at least one of the carbon atoms carrying the double bond, are cracked in the presence of SH radicals. Suitable conditions are 300-1000 DEG C., 0.001-3 seconds, 10 mm. Hg. to 500 p.s.i.g. and in the presence, if desired, of 0.5-15 mols per mol of olefine of a diluent such as steam, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane, ethane, propane, butanes, pentanes, ethylene, propylene, or butene-2. The SH radical may be provided by hydrogen sulphide, or a mercaptan such as ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, amyl or hexyl or sulphur which reacts with hydrogen present, used in amounts of 0.5-50 mols per mol of olefine. Lists of olefines are given which form 2- and 4-methylpentadiene-1,3, 3 - methylpentadiene-1,3, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, 2-ethylbutadiene, butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, butene-1 and -2, 2-methylbutene-1 and -2 and 3-methylbutene-1, pentene-1 and -2 and 2,3-dimethylbutene-1 and -2.
