Abstract
Cracking olefins to effect cleavage at a position beta to the double bond is effected in the presence of methylene chloride; the product comprises two olefins or a diolefin and a paraffin. Cracking is effected at 400-900 DEG C., 10 mm. Hg to 500 p.s.i.g. for 0.001-3 seconds in the presence of a diluent, e.g. steam, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, paraffins or a refractory olefin, in an amount of 0.5-15 mols. per mol. of olefin. The amount of methylene chloride may be 0.5-50% mol. based on the olefin. Many suitable feeds are specified for the production of butadiene, isoprene, 2-ethylbutadiene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, 2- or 3-methylpentadiene-1,3, and piperylenes. In an example, 3-methylpentene-2 is cracked to isoprene.
