Abstract
N-Brominated organic compounds are prepared by adding hypochlorite ions to an acid solution of succinimide, glutarimide, hydantoin or a 5,5-di-lower alkyl hydantoin ("lower" meaning containing 1-4 carbon atoms) and bromine, the pH being maintained between 1.0 and 4.0 during at least the greater part of the reaction period. The hypochlorite ions may be provided by means of chlorine or an alkali hypochlorite. Examples prepare:- (1)-(5) N-bromosuccinimide, (6), (7) N-bromoglutarimide, (8), (9) 1,3-dibromohydantoin, (10), (11) monobromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, (12)-(16) 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin, (17), (18) monobromo-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin, (19), (20) 1,3-dibromo-5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin, (21) monobromo-5-isobutyl-5-methylhydantoin, and (22), (23) 1,3-dibromo-5-isobutyl-5-methylhydantoin.
