Abstract

The invention comprises (1) 2,4-diamino-5-bromo -6- chloropyrimidine, and (2) the preparation of 5-chloro- and 5-bromoderivatives of 2,4-diamino -6- chloropyrimidine by treating that compound with the respective halogen in an aqueous alcoholic solution maintained at pH 5-9 using an unreactive inorganic buffer. According to the Provisional Specification 2,4-diamino -5- bromo -6- chloropyrimidine may also be prepared by bromination with N-bromosuccinimide or by reacting the 6-hydroxy compound with a chlorinating agent such as phosphoryl chloride.
