915,750. Making heat exchangers; brazing. G.K.N. GROUP SERVICES Ltd. Jan. 26, 1961 [Feb. 1, 1960], No. 3427/60. Addition to 820,554. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In making a heat exchanger consisting of a stack of plates 10 spaced by and brazed at their peripheries to spacer elements 14 to provide wafer-like passageways having inlet and outlet ports between the ends of the spacer elements 14, filler pieces 17 formed of or coated with a material resistant to brazing are temporarily inserted in the ports during the brazing operation. The material may be alumina or titanium oxide. The plates 10 may be 0.012 inch thick and the height of the passageways maybe 0.05 inch. Mild steel plates 10 and spacer elements 14 may be brazed using interposed copper brazing foil with the plates 10 lying horizontally and pressure being applied to the outer plates during heating, say in an oven in a reducing atmosphere. Alternatively, the brazing material may be applied by immersion. In a modification, the filler pieces 27 are zigzag strips of a metal known as " Nimonic " (Registered Trade Mark).
