Abstract
912,129. Rotary printing-presses; regulation of cylinders. AMERICAN TYPE FOUNDERS CO. Inc. Oct. 25, 1960 [Dec. 30, 1959], No. 36662/60. Class 100 (2). In a rotary printing-press comprising a plate cylinder co-operating with another, e.g. a blanket cylinder, a degree of circumferential adjustment for registration purposes is effected by moving one end bearing of the plate cylinder perpendicular to the plane joining the axes of the two cylinders in their normal parallel positions such that the plate cylinder is skewed relative to the other cylinder. In the press shown, the plate cylinder 25, Figs. 3, 11, is mounted in roller bearings 16 in side frames 10, 12. The bearing 16 carried by the frame 10 is movable between limits f, e, Fig. 11, to enable the cylinder to be skewed about a pivot point h and such movement is effected by enclosing the bearing in an open-ended box 38, Figs. 3, 10, which is closed at its outer end by a cap 40 and has a circular wall having internal and external eccentric surfaces. The cap 40 is bolted to the box and carries an arcuate gear portion 45, Fig. 1, which meshes with a worm 52 fixed to the side frame 10. Rotation of the worm rotates the box 38, thus causing the associated end of the cylinder shaft 21 to move in a slightly curved direction a-b between limits c and d, Fig. 10. The worm 52 is inwardly inclined towards the side frame 10 such that the box 38 may be moved axially to effect axial registration of the plate cylinder without disengagement of the worm from the segment 45. This axial movement is effected by pro-- viding a screw-thread 60 at the outer end of the box which is threadedly engaged by a nut 62 carrying teeth 63 rotatable by a pinion 65 mounted on the frame 10. Outward movement of the box is limited by an arcuate-shaped shroud 68 bolted to the side frame. The plate cylinder has associated ink form rollers 70, 71, 72 and water form rollers 90, 91. The axle 73 of each ink roller is mounted at each end in a hanger 78 pivotally mounted in the case of rollers 70 and 71 on the shaft of an ink vibrator roller 82 and in the case of the roller 72 on the shaft of a vibrator roller 84. The axles 92 of the rollers 90, 91 are similarly supported in hangers 95 mounted on the shaft 98 of a water vibrator roller 99. Each axle end is clamped in the associated hanger such as 95, Fig. 4, which is connected to a pinion 110, rotatably mounted in the adjacent side frame, through a bar 115 having right-hand and left-hand screw threads at its opposite ends which are respectively threadedly engated in a pin 112, rotatably and eccentrically mounted in the stub shaft 108 of the pinion 110, and the pin 105. The inner end of an eccentric sleeve 36 in which the bearing box 38 is mounted carries gear segments 101 and 102, the former being in gear with the pinions 110 of the rollers 90, 91 whilst the latter engages the pinions of the rollers 70, 71, 72. The gear segments 101 and 102 associated with the side frame 12 are mounted on an extension 100 of the bearing bore 13. Pressure adjustment between the individual rollers and the cylinder is effected through rotation of the associated bars 115. The rollers may be simultaneously tripped-in and tripped-away by actuation of a link 120, Fig. 1, mounted externally of the frame 10, which, through gearing 127, 128, 129, links 133 and levers 134 carrying teeth 136, rotates the segments 102 and, through links 141, crank members 143, Figs. 2, 13, and links 147 rotates the segments 101 to thus rotate the pinions 110 in unison. When the plate cylinder is skewed the ink form rollers 70, 71, 72, remain substantially in contact therewith but the water form rollers 90, 91 have to be similarly skewed. This is effected by eccentrically mounting the crank member 143, Fig. 2, associated with the side frame 10 on a rotatable shaft 155. Fig. 8, which passes through the frame and is rocked by a link 162 pivotally connected to the cap 40. The degree of rocking of the shaft 155 arising from the movement of the link 162 when the box 38 and hence the cap 40 is rotated for skewing the plate cylinder may be adjusted through a pin-and-slot arrangement connecting the link to the shaft. The invention also envisages a rotary printing press in which the ink form rollers are skewed with the plate cylinder. Specification 910,627 in referred to.
