Abstract
Alkali or alkaline earth metal boro-hydrides are prepared by reducing either (a) a compound consisting of boron, oxygen, and an alkali or alkaline earth metal or (b) a mixture of an oxidic boron compound (which may contain an alkali or alkaline earth metal) and an alkali or alkaline earth metal or a hydride, carbide, oxide, or hydroxide thereof, with silicon per se or with silicon in the form of an alloy or a metal silicide in the presence of hydrogen at superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 10-300 atms., and 200 DEG -800 DEG C. The reaction may be in liquid or solid phase and powdered reactants may be compressed with a temporary binder and sintered. The Specification refers to the action of silicon and hydrogen on sodium orthoborate, on a mixture of potassium metaborate and calcium oxide or hydride, on a mixture of sodium metaborate and calcium carbide, on a mixture of boron trioxide and barium oxide or sodium, or on a mixture of metaboric acid and strontium oxide, and to the reaction of sodium metaborate, calcium silicide, and hydrogen, or potassium metaborate, aluminium silicide and hydrogen. The Specification also refers to the reaction of silicon with a mixture of sodium metaborate and sodium hydroxide, and of metaboric acid and lithium hydroxide, when the hydrogen atmosphere is produced in the reaction.
