908,420. Cooling systems for engines. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Feb. 13, 1961 [April 20, 1960], No. 5217/61. Class 64 (3). [Also in Group XXVII] The coolant system of an engine comprises a radiator with a vented top tank, a pump for circulating water through passages in the engine, a wall restricting flow between the passages and vented tank, and means to purge air from the upper part of the passages by means of a cell placed in the wall and communicating between the passages and the vented top tank by means of restricted orifices, the cell being connected to the upper part of the passages. The pump 12 causes water to flow through the cylinder block 10, around the liners 16 and pistons 17, through the cylinder head 11 and opening 20 and upwardly through the thermostatic valve 22 to the vented radiator 24. The valve 22 prevents the passage of the coolant if its temperature is below a certain value. Entrapped air collects at the rear of the cylinder head 11 and is purged from here through the tube 31 to the cell 30, the orifice 33 then allows the air to escape to the atmosphere via the tube 24b. The coolant pressure below the cell 30 is greater than atmospheric pressure above it, and the median pressure in the cell is considerably less than that in the rear cylinder head; thus entrapped air is easily purged from the system.
