Abstract
798,967. Cooling systems for internal combustion engines. RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. Oct. 1, 1956 [Sept. 30, 1955], No. 27806/55. Class 64(3) In a cooling system for an I.C. engine in which cooling liquid delivered by a pump 11 passes through the cooling jacket of the engine 13 to a thermostatic valve and thence either to a sump or back to the pump, an alternative discharge channel is provided for flow of liquid from the pump and includes a pressure operated relief valve so arranged and set as to permit discharge when the thermostatic valve is closed. In the marine installation shown, the thermostatic and relief valves (not shown) are incorporated in a single control unit 16. Pump 11 draws up sea water a portion of which passes through the engine jacket from an inlet port 12 to an outlet port 14, thence to an inlet port 15 of the control valve unit 16 from which it is directed by the action of the thermally controlled valve initially, when the engine is cold, to the port 18 leading to the suction side of the pump 11 and thereafter, when the engine has warmed up, to port 17 leading overboard. The remaining portion of the water leaving the pump 11 passes to an inlet port 19 of the control valve unit 16 and is there operative upon a spring loaded relief valve such that if sufficient pressure exists in the system indicating that sufficient coolant is passing through the engine cooling jacket, then the relief valve is forced open and coolant flowing to the port 19 is directed to discharge port 17 of the control valve unit and hence overboard. If however pressure is insufficient to open the relief valve then the coolant passing to port 19 is directed to the port 18 leading to the suction side of the pump. A priming valve is also provided in the control unit 16.
