Abstract
The invention comprises a 2-cyano-3-oxo steroid, the steroid moiety of which contains 18 to 23 carbon atoms exclusive of ester radicals, and salts thereof derived from strong inorganic bases, and the preparation thereof by treating steroido [2-3-d] isoxazoles with a strong inorganic base (an alkali metal alkoxide may also be used) to form a salt of the 2-cyano-3-oxo steroid and, if desired, converting the salt to the free 2-cyano-3-oxo steroid by acidification. The steroid moiety may be a member of the androstane, etiocholane or pregnane series and may contain one or more double bonds especially at the 4,5- and/or 6,7-positions. The steroid moiety may be substituted at the 17-position by a hydroxy, acyloxy or oxo substituent, or both a hydroxy and alkyl substituents, or a lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, acetyl, hydroxyacetyl, 1,2-dihydroxyethyl or 1-hydroxyethyl substituent. The lower alkyl, lower alkenyl and lower alkynyl radicals contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The steroid may also be an 18- or 19-nor-steroid.
