A fire-extinguisher comprises a container 21 for a pressurized fire-extinguishing agent, e.g. of the dry chemical type, including a removable head 1 detachably secured to the container 21 by an attachment member, such as a union ring 15, which is locked against detachment by the pressure within the container, the head having a discharge passage 4a and a movable valve member 5, and having an actuator 7 for moving the valve 5 to permit fire-extinguishing agent to pass through the discharge passage 4a and which is retained in the actuated position by means of a latch 11. The attachment member includes means, e.g. the rim 20 of the union ring 15, which prohibits release of the latch 11 when in the latched position and thus prohibits return of the actuator from its actuated position until such time as the pressure in the container has been exhausted and until predetermined movement of the attachment member in a direction to permit detachment of the head 1 has been effected. When the pressure has been exhausted the union ring 15 can be rotated until the slot 18 is beneath a release lever 8 which can then be moved downwardly to disengage the latch 11 from a pin 12. The flow of fire-extinguishing agent is controlled by a valve in a nozzle provided on the end of a flexible hose 24.
