Abstract

A motor vehicle lifting device comprises a plurality of vehiclesupporting cantilever arms, which are pivoted about vertical axes to a frame mounted on a lifting post and which are adapted to tilt to a limited extent when under load so that they engage between a bottom horizontal plate and a protruding marginal portion of an upper horizontal plate of the frame. As shown, the vehicle is supported on four pads 100 slidably mounted on arms 40, 42, 44, 46 pivoted to a frame 22 which is raised by an hydraulic ram 20 and which comprises a bottom plate, on which the arms are pivoted, and an overlying plate having a lip 30 extending over the inner end of each arm. Each arm is provided with a pair of holes 62 containing balls spring urged down against the frame 22 to disengage the unloaded arms from the bottom plate and lip 30 so that they may be turned freely about their pivotal axes. On supporting a vehicle the springs are compressed and the arms rest on the frame 22, the inner end of each arm frictionally engaging the lip 30, thus preventing the arms from being moved angularly. Arms 40, 42 are interconnected by pivoted levers 82, 84 and gear sectors 86 pivoted at 88 on the frame 22, the arms 44, 46 being similarly interconnected. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), two supporting rams are provided, each carrying a frame to which two supporting arms are pivoted, each arm being adjustable independently. The load-engaging pads 100 are each mounted on a channel member 110 pivoted to a channel member 102, which is slidable along the arm, and may be supported in the position shown by a bracket 132.
