An electrical furnace has at least one wall 1 constructed of refractory ceramic material and formed with one or more projecting ledges 2 for receiving elongated electrical heating elements 8 at least one ledge 2 having a removable heating element holder 4 of refractory ceramic material which extends along and rests on the ledge, the holder being formed on its lower surface with at least one projection 5 or recess which engages a recess 3 or projection respectively on the upper surface of the ledge so as to restrain the holder from sliding laterally off the ledge and is formed on its upper surface with a heating element receiving channel, the side of which presented to the interior of the furnace is formed by a plurality of upwardly-projecting fingers spaced apart along the length of the holder. The bricks 1 are of ceramic material and are arranged in rows one above the other. The heating element holders 4 are also of ceramic material, e.g. of high alumina content and are arranged end to end on each ledge. The holders and bricks are of different ceramic material. The holders 4 have ridges 5 and hold electric heating elements 8 of helical wire coil-type enclosing a ceramic rod 9. A number of heating coils may be arranged end to end.
