Abstract

The porosity of a carbon or graphite article, e.g. a tube, is reduced by impregnating with furfuryl alcohol and then resinifying and carbonizing the furfuryl alcohol. The furfuryl alcohol may contain 0,05-1,0% of hydrochloric or nitric acid as resinifying agent. Partial resinification may be effected before impregnation by refluxing in air for a period of 20-50 hours or by treatment with 0,01-0,02% hydrochloric or nitric acid. The furfuryl alcohol may contain suspended carbon, e.g. lamp black. The treatment may be performed first with carbon in suspension and then repeated without. Impregnation may be effected first through one face and then through an opposite face. Impregnation may be effected at an initial pressure of 10 microns of mercury and a final pressure of 100-500 p.s.i. After impregnation, resinification may be commenced at room temperature in an atmosphere of furfuryl alcohol or mineral acid gas and completed by heating at a temperature of 40 DEG -220 DEG C. Carbonizing may be effected by heating to a temperature of 1000 DEG -1350 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere or packed in lamp black or powdered graphite. Graphitizing may be effected by heating to 2800 DEG C. The impermeability may be reduced to 6,3X10-7 cm2/sec. Example are given.
