Abstract

A body of graphite impermeable to liquids and gases is prepared by treating at least a part of the surface of an artificially produced graphite body with graphitic acid, or a salt thereof with a volatile base, in a liquid medium, evaporating off the liquid medium, and converting the graphitic acid or salt to graphite. The liquid medium, for example water, may contain 0.1 to 3 per cent of graphitic acid as a solution, sol or emulsion. The conversion to graphite may be carried out at a temperature between 130 and 200 DEG C., preferably in a reducing atmosphere, for example in hydrazine vapour. The initial graphite body may be produced by compressing carbon powder followed by a heat treatment. The body may be machined either before or after treatment with graphitic acid, preferably before the conversion to graphite. Parts of the graphite body not impregnated with graphite may be impregnated with other substances, for example copper, to facilitate soldering to metal parts.
