Abstract
The porosity of graphite is reduced by impregnating with a metal compound, e.g. zirconium tetraiodide, and heating the graphite in a vacuum or inert atmosphere, so as to decompose the compound and form a metal carbide. A graphite vessel may be internally evacuated while surrounded by zirconium tetraiodide vapour. The vessel may then be heated to 1300 DEG C. to form zirconium and then to 2000 DEG C. to form zirconium carbide.
