Abstract
A polyurea is made by heating together at least one diamine having two terminal primary amino groups connected by an aliphatic hydrocarbon chain, at least one carbon atom of said chain being bonded to an alkyl group of not more than three carbon atoms, said diamine containing a total of 4 to 11 carbon atoms in the molecule, or carbonate thereof, with at least one of urea, thiourea, methylene diurea, ethylene diurea, methylene dithiourea and ethylene dithiourea in an inert atmosphere. Viscosity stabilizers, e.g. aliphatic monobasic acids, alkyl monoamides, alkyl monoamines or N-acyl-alkylene diamines may be present in the reaction mixture. The process may be effected in the presence of a solvent, e.g. water, phenol or m-cresol and may be carried out in three stages. The examples describe the preparation of polyureas from reaction mixtures comprising:- (1) 1,8-diamino-2-ethyl octane, urea and palmitic acid; (2) 1,6-diamino-2,5-diethyl hexane, methylene diurea and octylamine; (3) 1,5-diamino-3-methyl heptane, thiourea and palmitic acid amide; (4) 1,6-diamino-3-methyl hexane carbonate, urea and pelargonic acid; (5) 1,5-diamino-2,4-dimethyl pentane, urea and palmitic acid amide; (6) 1,6-diamino-2,4-dimethyl hexane, 1,6-diamino-2-methyl hexane, urea and caproic acid amide; (7) 1,6-diamino-3-isopropyl hexane, urea and palmitic acid amide and (8) 1,6-diamino-2,5-methylisopropyl hexane carbonate, thiourea and palmitic acid.
