Abstract
A polyurea copolymer is made by heating together in an inert atmosphere at least one diamine having two terminal primary amino groups and a connecting aliphatic hydrocarbon chain in which at least one carbon atom is bonded to an alkyl group of not more than 10 carbon atoms, said diamine containing a total of 3 to 30 carbon atoms to the molecule, or carbonate thereof, and at least one polymethylene diamine having 2 to 20 carbon atoms to the molecule, or carbonate thereof, with one or more of urea, thiourea, methylene diurea, ethylene diurea, methylene dithiourea and ethylene dithiourea. The reaction is preferably effected in solution in water, phenol or m-cresol with gradual elevation of temperature in the presence of an aliphatic monobasic acid, alkyl monoamide, alkyl monoamine or N-acyl-alkylene diamine as viscosity stabilizer. The examples describe the preparation of polyurea copolymers from:- (1) 1,8-diamino-2-ethyloctane, urea and 1,8-diamino-2-ethyloctane in the presence of caproic acid amide; (2) 1,6-diamino hexane, 1,6-diamino-2-methylhexane and thiourea in the presence of palmitic acid; (3) methylene urea, 1,8-diamino octane carbonate and 1,6-diamino-2,5-diethylhexane in the presence of palmitic acid amide; (4) 1,5-diamino heptane, 1,4-diamino-2-methyl-butane and urea in the presence of pelargonic acid and (5) 1,6-diamino hexane, 1,6-diamino-3-isopropyl-hexane and thiourea in the presence of octylamine, the products being spun into fibres or moulded. Specification 900,788 is referred to.
