Abstract
Polyvinyl acetate having a substantially stable degree of polymerization when subjected to alcoholysis is prepared by subjecting vinyl acetate to ionizing radiation in the absence of oxygen or other such reactive substance at a temperature below that at which thermal polymerization occurs, e.g. below 50 DEG C. Polyvinyl alcohol of corresponding degree of polymerization is prepared by hydrolysis. In an example vinyl acetate is irradiated under vacuum with 225,000 roentgen equivalent physical of gamma radiation from a cobalt 60 source at 0 DEG C. and the polyvinyl acetate obtained from a 25% conversion of the monomer. The polymer was hydrolysed in ethyl alcohol by sodium hydroxide to yield a polyvinyl alcohol having an average degree of polymerization of 4,700. Alpha, beta or X-radiation may alternatively be employed. U.S.A. Specification 2,499,924 is referred to.
