Abstract
Unsaturated ethers of the formula R-O-CR1 =CH2, when R and R1 represent alkyl, alkenyl, or aryl groups or substituted alkyl, alkenyl or aryl groups except that R1 may be a hydrogen atom only, and R and R1 may be the same or different, are polymerized by exposing the ether, optionally in the presence of solvents, zinc oxide and other metal oxides, silica or organic polymers, to the action of high energy ionizing radiation, whilst maintaining the mix at a temperature of from -50 DEG -100 DEG C., and without the application of external pressure. Specified ethers are ethyl vinyl ether, n-butyl vinyl ether and isobutyl vinyl ether. The radiation may be produced by high energy electrons, X-rays, or gamma rays, particularly those emanating from a cobalt 60 source. A low dose rate not exceeding 10,000 rods per minute is preferably used, and the total dosage of radiation may be between 1 and 20 megarads. The product may be used in adhesives, tackifying agents and pressure sensitive tape formulations.
