Abstract

870,106. Radiation - absorbing materials. RASCH, R. Dec. 30, 1959 [Jan. 20, 1959], No. 44323/59. Class 39(4). A shield against neutrons, beta rays, and gamma rays is constructed from a material containing an addition of ferrosilicon. The constructional material may be concrete, cement, plaster, glass, porcelain, clay, or a synthetic plastic. A preferred addition material containing ferrosilicon is the slag obtained when corundum or carbides are produced by melting, in an electric furnace; this slag may also contain titanium. Boron compounds may also be present in the shield material to capture moderated neutrons. The shields may be used in nuclear reactors.
