Abstract

Copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate having 55 to 95% vinyl chloride units and possessing good solubility in organic solvents are prepared by suspension polymerization in an aqueous medium, the polymerization being carried out at a temperature of 48 DEG to 65 DEG C., a ratio of monomers being maintained of 40-60% by weight of vinyl chloride to 60-40% by weight of vinyl acetate, and vinyl chloride being continuously introduced during the polymerization. The reaction is effected in the presence of a catalyst such as dilauryl, diacetyl or dicaproyl peroxide, diisopropyl or ditertiarybutyl percarbonate or azodiisobutyric acid dinitrile, and a dispersing agent such as polyvinyl alcohol or methylated or oxyethylated cellulose. There may also be added a regulator such as methylene chloride, chloroform, dichloro-dibromo-ethane, symmetrical dichlorethylene, trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene or tetrahydrofurane.
