Abstract

Copolymers, which are resistant to inflammation and sparingly soluble in organic solvents, are made by copolymerizing vinyl acetate with triallyl phosphate in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. a peroxide or persulphate. The process may be effected in bulk in a sealed vessel at temperatures of 40-100 DEG C.; by refluxing in aqueous dispersion; or in solution, e.g. in methanol. Monomer mixtures containing 2-40 per cent of triallyl phosphate yield hard, tough, clear resins which are not easily burnt or are self-extinguishing after ignition. With more than 40 per cent of triallyl phosphate, the products are jelly-like and strongly resistant to fire. Benzoyl peroxide and potassium persulphate are specified catalysts and dispersion ingredients include the sodium salt of maleic anhydride-styrene copolymer, ethyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol. The resins may be moulded and machined.
