Abstract
Mono- and di-pivalyl ferrocenes are made by heating ferrocene with a pivalyl halide, optionally in the presence of an iron compound other than anhydrous ferric chloride as a catalyst. A suitable pivalyl halide is pivalyl chloride. The iron compound should be soluble in organic solvents and may be iron pivalate. The reaction is preferably carried out between 70 DEG and 180 DEG C. using as solvent ethylene dichloride, di-n-butyl ether or excess of the pivalyl halide used as a reactant.
