Abstract

898,383. Expansion joints. TEDDINGTON AIRCRAFT CONTROLS Ltd. Feb. 13, 1961 [Feb. 15, 1960], No. 5322/60. Class 99(1). A fluid-tight expansion joint incorporates a single, flexible, metallic bellows 8 and means are provided whereby the pressure of the media carried by the pipes 1, 2 is applied to the bellows externally thereof so that the pressure on the exterior of the bellows is greater than the pressure on the interior thereof. As shown, the pipe 2 is slidable within a guide ring 5 carried by a casing 4 secured to the pipe 1, the bellows 8 being in fluid-tight connection with the ring and a further ring 9 fixed to the pipe 2. The interior of the bellows is subject to atmospheric pressure and the space between the bellows and the casing is subject to the pressure of the medium passing through the pipes. Excessive expansion of the bellows is prevented by abutment of the ends of the pipes, and excessive compression of the bellows is prevented by the abutment of interengaging, slotted guides 6, 7; the latter also prevent relative twisting motion of the pipes. The bellows may be reinforced by internal rings. Specification 889,124 is referred to.
