Abstract

The corrosion resistance of a zinc surface is improved by contacting it with a solution containing zinc ions and chromate ions in a ratio of zinc to chromate of 9:1 to 1:9,5. The temperature of the surface should be above the boiling point of the solvent for the solution and below the melting point of zinc so as to volatilise the volatile components of the solution immediately after the solution contacts the surface. Bodies made of zinc or zinc alloy or bodies coated with zinc or zinc alloy, e.g. galvanised articles, may be treated. The solution may be applied by spraying or by a roll, and may contain zinc chloride or zinc nitrate together with chromic acid, suitable solvents being water, alcohol and alcohol/water mixtures. Exemplified solutions also contain nitrates of magnesium, aluminium, cobalt and nickel.
