Abstract
A method of making matte tin plate, which will not turn yellow on storage and which will not blacken during baking incident to lacquer coating or lithographing, comprises electroplating a tin coating on to a sheet-steel base giving it a matte appearance, heating the tin plate to a temperature below its melting point in the range 420-445 DEG F. for a time not exceeding 10 seconds at the selected temperature, then immediately quenching the tin plate and subjecting it to electrolysis as cathode in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal dichromate containing substantially 24 grams of the dichromate per litre. In an example this solution contained 24 gs./l. sodium dichromate adjusted to a pH of 4.7 at a temperature of 125 DEG F. and a current of 52 coulombs per sq.ft. of the strip was passed. After emerging from the treating solution, the strip was rinsed with cold water, dried with steam and electrostatically oiled. The strip did not darken when baked at a lacquer-curing temperature of 375 DEG F. for 13 minutes.
