Abstract

Metal workpieces are descaled and phosphated by treatment with a single aqueous solution containing, by weight, 8-25% of phosphoric acid in free and chemicallycombined form, 1-5% of phosphate, 0.1-1.5% of an acid other than phosphoric acid, 10-40% of an alcohol with a viscosity greater than that of water, 8-36% of an organic solvent miscible with water and with a viscosity lower than that of water, and 1-6% of an accelerator. The workpieces are immediately dried after treatment without prior rinsing. Specifically, the phosphate may be of zinc or manganese; the acid other than phosphoric may be hydrofluoric, tartaric, oxalic or citric acid; the alcohol may be isopropyl, butyl or undecyl alcohol; the organic solvent may be methanol, ethanol or acetone; and the accelerator may be chromic acid, nitric acid, zinc nitrate or sodium nitrite. Treatment may be effected by immersion, e.g. in a tumbling barrel, flowing, or spraying, e.g. in a centrifuge. The treated workpieces, which may be composed of iron, aluminium or zinc, are allowed to dry in air. Specification 493,365 is referred to.
