Abstract

898,071. Storing liquefied gases. NORTH THAMES GAS BOARD. Jan. 20, 1961 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 4204/60. Class 8(2). A liquefied gas storage tank is cooled to a temperature substantially below atmospheric by the injection thereinto of a spray of liquid which is normally gaseous at atmospheric pressure and at the temperature to which the tank is cooled, allowing the liquid to vaporize and the vapour or gas thus produced to circulate in the tank and removing excess vapour or gas from the tank; the spray of liquid is directed downwards from the centre of the top of the tank so that no liquid comes into contact with the walls of the tank, As described, a tank 1 for storing liquid methane comprises an inner metal shell 2 disposed within and spaced from an outer shell 3, the space between the shells being filled with an insulating powder. Projecting through the top of the tank is a main liquid inlet 10, a spray feed tube 17 and a gas outlet 11, the latter having a relief outlet 11a and the tube 17 feeding a hollow ring 18 provided with vortex pressure spray nozzles 19. Thermocouples 12 placed at various points in the tank are connected to a panel 14. The shells 2 and 3 stand on a base 4 spaced from a lower base 5 by insulating members 6. The liquid being sprayed into the tank may be some of the methane to be stored therein or it may be a different, preferably inert, liquid gas. Specifications 851,568 and 854,480 are referred to.
