Abstract

895,687. Direct-acting engines. THOMAS INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 18, 1958 [Nov. 25, 1957], No. 37091/58. Class 7(2). The piston 20 of a two-stroke engine has a tubular extension 18 which passes through the cylinder head to provide a direct power takeoff connection 26. In Fig. 1 the exhaust ports 25 are provided in the cylinder wall and inlet ports 22 in the extension 18. Compressed combustible mixture from the crank-case is forced through the piston 20 and extension 18 to the combustion space 14 when the ports 22 are uncovered on the piston inrstroke and is ignited by spark plug 15. In Fig. 2 the mixture is supplied through a transfer passage 34 and inlet ports 22a whilst the exhaust gases escape through ports 25a into the extension 18 and then through ports 35 to atmosphere.
