Abstract

824,673. Two-stroke engines. EHRLICH, J. July 23, 1957 [July 25, 1956], No. 23041/56. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) Crankcase compressed air or, as shown, combustible mixture is transferred to the cylinder both via passages 41 and ports 40 and via reservoirs 44 filled when their only ports 43 communicate with the crankcase via piston wall ports 47. The reservoirs 44, which have already been isolated when the ports 40 open, discharge when cylinder exhaust through a port 38 is about to cause a negative cylinder pressure which is thus substantially avoided. Charge from the reservoirs 44 remains in the piston crown concavity and protects the spark plug 32 from exhaust gases on charge compression. The crankcase may be supplied from a compressor. In a modification, the piston crown is concave and co-acts with a convex cylinder head having a central domed recess at the apex of which a spark plug or fuel injector is mounted axially of the cylinder, the reservoirs 44 being dispensed with and both the ports 40, 43 communicating with the crankcase via transfer passages fed through piston wall ports.
