Regulating. - In a two-stroke-cycle engine having a pair of cylinders disposed one on each side of a central crank-shaft, and using crankcase compression, air and rich combustible mixture are compressed in separate compartments in the crank case, the air being delivered to the cylinders in advance of the combustible mixture. Combustible mixture is admitted to the portion 21 of the crank chamber, and air to the portion 24. Air-transfer passages 8<a>, 9<a> open into the cylinders through ports 10<a>, 11<a>, and mixture-transfer passages 8<b>, 9<b> discharge into the cylinders through ports 10<b>, 11<b>. The volume of mixture admitted to the crank case is such that air enters the cylinders for scavenging purposes in advance of the combustible mixture. The passages 8<a>, 8<b> or 9<a>, 9<b> may communicate with one another as shown in Fig. 3; or the communicating passages 25, 26 may be dispensed with, in which case the air ports 10<a>, 11<a> open in advance of the ports 10<b>, 11<b>. A valve 17 may close the transfer passages 9<a>, 9<b> when it is desired to cut out the cylinder 2. A modification is described in which communication between adjacent transfer passages is effected through a port in the piston. Compressed air may be supplied to the crank chamber to increase the final pressure of the charges entering the cylinders.
