In an outboard drive unit in which the propeller shaft 13 is driven from a perpendicular transmission shaft in turn driven from a laterally-extending power-input shaft 21, the transmission shaft is formed in two coaxial portions 39, 44, one within the other, which are driven in opposite directions from the input shaft (via bevel gears 47, 43, 35) and transmit a unidirectional drive to the propeller shaft (via bevel gears 48, 45, 40).
