Abstract

892,778. Laminates. BAKELITE Ltd. Oct. 28, 1960 [Oct. 29, 1959], No. 36752/59. Class 140. Laminates which may be used as or in making articles such as chemical tanks or ducts, are made by applying a coating of epoxide resin composition to a mould and allowing it partially to cure, applying a layer of granular material such as crushed coke or crushed rigid phenolic resin foam to the resin layer or to a second similar layer applied thereover, completely setting the resin, applying a polyester resin mix followed by a layer of fibrous material, particularly a mat, felted layer, or woven fabric of glass fibres, and causing or allowing the polyester resin to set. The granular layer acts as a bond between the resins, is embedded in both, and is of material having good compressive and tensile strength and a highly cavitated surface. The epoxy resin may be a polyglycidyl ether of bis-phenol A and the composition containing it may include a filler such as slate powder and a thixotropic agent such as finely divided silica. The polyester resin may be a polypropylene fumaratephthalate.
