Abstract

A sheet of flexible, highly compressible and readily wettable foamed plastic having open connected cells with an average cell diameter of 0.0025 cm. to 1.3 cm. is impregnated with an unpolymerized thermosetting resinous composition and then by substantially compressing the impregnated sheet the resinous composition is cured to a hardened thermoset condition. The foamed plastic is preferably polyurethane and the thermosetting resinous composition is preferably an unsaturated polyester dissolved in a comonomer, but epoxy resins, phenol-aldehyde resins, melamine-aldehyde resins and diallyl phthalate resins are also mentioned. Reinforcing fibres, e.g. glass fibres, may be embedded in the thermosetting resinous composition. When the thermosetting resinous composition is an unsaturated polyester resinous composition, the foamed plastic sheet may be preliminarily impregnated with the unsaturated polyester composition or with the comonomer alone, and then later further impregnated with more of the unsaturated polyester composition. The impregnated foamed plastic sheets may be used as coatings, or in laminates or in the form of a tape for encapsulating articles. The foamed plastic sheets and the thermosetting resinous compositions may be of the same or different colours.ALSO:A sheet of flexible, highly compressible and readily wettable foamed plastic having open connected cells with an average cell diameter of 0.0025 cm. to 1.3 cm. is impregnated with an unpolymerized thermosetting resinous composition and then by substantially compressing the impregnated sheet the resinous composition is cured to a hardened thermoset condition giving an internally coated foamed sheet. The foamed plastic is preferably polyurethane and the thermosetting resinous composition is preferably an unsaturated polyester dissolved in a comonomer, but epoxy resins, phenol-aldehyde resins, melamine-aldehyde resins and diallyl phthalate resins are also mentioned. Reinforcing fibres may be embedded in the thermosetting resinous composition. The foamed plastic sheets and the thermosetting resinous compositions may be of the same or different colours.
