Abstract

A mat for use in moulding between heated dies comprises a fibrous material impregnated with a thermosetting and/or thermoplastic resin. The fibres are preferably wood fibres which are first impregnated with the resin to a density in the range 1.5-3 lb. per cubic foot and then compressed to a density of at least 20 lb. per cubic foot. Specific compositions given are:-(1) 90 parts by weight wood fibre and 10 parts of the resin obtained as a by-product in refining wood resin from pine wood; (2) 89 parts by weight Douglas Fir fibre, 10 parts of an amorphous thermoplastic acidic resin made by treating natural wood resin to cause about 40% of the unsaturated acids to unite as polymers and 1 part of phenol formaldehyde; (3) 84 parts by weight of hemlock fibre, 15 parts of polyvinyl acetate, 1 part of phenol formaldehyde; and (4) 85 parts of Douglas Fir fibre, 5 parts wood rosin, 5 parts polyvinyl acetate, 5 parts phenol formaldehyde.
