Abstract

a ,a -Dichloropropionic acid is prepared by chlorinating propionic acid to a -chloro- and then to a ,a -dichloropropionic acid, the chlorination in both stages being carried out using dry reactants and in the substantial absence of air, oxygen and compounds giving rise to free radicals, under the reaction conditions, and in the presence of at least 5 mol per cent. based on propionic acid, of thionyl chloride, an acyl chloride or a chlorine-substituted acyl chloride. The reaction mixture may also contain propionic anhydride. Specified acyl chlorides are propionyl, a - chloropropionyl and a , a - dichloropropionyl chloride, or mixtures therof or with thionyl chloride. The first stage may be carried out at 100 DEG C.-110 DEG C. and the second at 150 DEG C.-160 DEG C. Products obtained in the examples, in addition to a ,a -dichloropropionic acid, are a -chloropropionyl chloride, a -chloropropionic acid, trichloropropionic acid, propionyl chloride, a ,a -dichloropropionyl chloride, and a ,a -dichloropropionic anhydride.
