Abstract
Phthalic acids are prepared by a method comprising oxidizing the corresponding toluic acids in liquid phase with aqueous nitric acid at a temperature within the range 150-250 DEG C. while maintaining the concentration of the aqueous nitric acid at 1.15 to 15 per cent by weight based on the water present throughout the oxidation. Preferably a molar ratio of nitric acid to toluic acids in the range 2:1 to 8:1 is used and the nitric acid fed into the mixture has a concentration of 10 per cent by weight. In the examples the process is carried out both batchwise and continuously using varying reaction conditions.
