Abstract

890,051. Screwing up and unscrewing studs. AUSTIN MOTOR CO. Ltd. Sept. 26, 1960 [Aug. 25, 1959], No. 28976/59. Class 83 (3). A machine for feeding and screwing up studs comprises a hopper 2, carrying studs 1 which are fed to a screwing up spindle 3 carried by a slide, and rotated by a reversible air motor, and an axially movable guide bush 23 carried by a pivoting arm 14 being aligned with spindle 3, and the tapped hole for the stud. The hopper has an upper portion 2B, and a lower portion 2A pivotable on pins 6 by an air cylinder 8, and the pivoting movement is limited by adjustable stops 9. Spindle 3 is axially slidable in a bore 4 of a block 5, and the guide bush arm 14 is dowelled in a slot 16 of a spring-urged spindle 15 slidable in a bore in a block 5, a cam slot in the spindle co-operating with a pin 19 so that on axial movement of the spindle, arm 14 is pivoted. In operation, portion 2A of the hopper is tilted and a stud passes through an aperture 11 in the hopper into bore 4, and portion 2A is retracted. The stud is pushed forward by spindle 3 until it engages arm 14, and spindle 15 is moved a further distance axially until pin 19 co-operating with slots 18 rotates arm 14 to align bush 23 with the stud. The stud is frictionally held in bush 23 by a spring-urged plunger 24 until the stud is screwed into a bore in the rotating spindle 3 and engages a hardened steel plug in the bore and the stud is screwed into the stud receiving hole (not shown).
