Abstract
887,450. Spray-producers. SHELL RESEARCH Ltd. Aug. 3, 1960, No. 26897/60. Class 69 (3). [Also in Group XI] A rotary cup atomizer 1, e.g. for an oil burner, is supplied with liquid at 2, Fig. 1, which flows outwardly behind a baffle plate 4 to an annular gap 9 to thereby supply a reservoir 12 formed behind a weir 6 during rotation of the cup. In operation, liquid spills over the weir and flows along the wall 7 to the cup periphery from which it is discharged as a uniform spray. Air may be supplied to an annular space around the cup periphery. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, an air space 14 is provided and the cup has a baffle plate 4<SP>1</SP> with an extension 16 with liquid outlets 17 screwed to the cup base. An extension 18 leading from the plate reduces the free air space within the reservoir behind the weir 6. In Fig. 4, the baffle plate 26 is secured to the drive shaft 25 and also extends to the cup wall and is secured thereto by pins. Liquid is supplied by a stationary nozzle 29 and flows through passages 28 to the reservoir. Liquid is syphoned from the reservoir through the nozzle during rotational run-down of the cup.
