Abstract
<PICT:0891342/III/1> In a method of electrostatic spray painting, the paint is projected centrifugally in a radial direction from a charged plate-like distributer electrode and is atomized and charged as it leaves the periphery thereof, and an electrostatic screen is spaced axially from a part of the electrode from which paint is projected towards a workpiece to control the axial dispersion of the spray pattern. Paint is fed through a pipe 28 (Fig. 1) to a cup (not shown) from which it overflows into the well portion 24 of the distributer 22. The cup and distributer 22 are mounted on a shaft 26, which is rotated, and a high electrical potential difference is produced between the distributer and workpieces 42, by means of a generator 36, so that the paint is atomized at the edge of the distributer 22 and deposited on the workpieces. Also mounted on the shaft 26 are electrostatic screens 50 and 52, which preferably project radially beyond the edge of the distributer 22. Either of these screens may be omitted; they may be circular or of other shapes, e.g. cruciform. A plurality of distributers, separated by screens, may be mounted on a common shaft, and provided with axially spaced end-shields.
