Waste fibrous material is defibrated in a hammer mill, pneumatically conveyed to a volumetric feeder, picked up by a rising conveyer acting with suction to form continuous fibrous strips 52 which are trimmed to the required thickness and width, e.g. as disclosed in Specifications 884,191 and 884,193. The strips 52 pass to a wide conveyer 46 and are compacted by a belt 5 and divided into pad portions with the aid of a hood 7 or a hood 7A according to the length of pad required, one hood 7 being fixed relatively to a carriage 23 and the other 7A being movable. A drum cam 21 is rotated by a shaft 22 which also carries switch units controlling suction and compressed air supplies to the hoods 7, 7A to remove portions of the strips 52 to effect the subdivision thereof into batts. The batts pass across a gap 10 to a conveyer 47, where they are covered by paper webs 11, 12, the latter being glue-coated at 13 so that the batts adhere thereto, as does also the upper web 11, when pressed thereon by rollers 14 and by bars 16, 16A which reciprocate above a conveyer 49. The assemblage is divided longitudinally by rotary knives 17A, and transversely by a serrated, rotary knife 18 as disclosed in Specification 884,194 to leave projecting, frayed, fibrous edges, so that e.g. polished furniture is not scratched if packaged with such pads. An adhesive which is pliable after setting may be used for the same reason. In a modification, only one hood of inverted U-shaped cross-section is used instead of the hoods 7, 7A, and such a hood may remove a portion of the fibrous material in four equal parts. A network of rollers may be used for impressing corrugations in the upper web 11. Specifications 884,197 and 884,201 also are referred to.
