Abstract
884,070. Gas seals for floating roof tanks. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. Sept. 28, 1960 [Dec. 15, 1959], No. 33273/60. Class 69 (1). A floating-roof tank has a removable seal device in the annular space between the roof 11 and the tank wall 10 comprising a gas-inflated annular tube 13 removably secured to the roof by a connector. The tube is of vapourimpervious flexible material, vulcanized or impregnated with polyurethane, of integral construction or built up from more than one piece. It is suspended by lugs 14 and 15 formed from, or fixed on to, the material of the wall of the tube. The lugs may both be fixed only to a spaced series of upper connectors 21 hanging from the top of the roof (Fig. 1, not shown), or lugs 14 may be posed to a set of upper connectors 21 and lugs 15 to lower connectors 23-24, hitched removably under the floor 26 of the roof at 25. In both these instances hoops 16 and 17 extending circumferentially round the roof assist in clamping the lugs to the connectors. In other embodiments a metal plate may replace the fabric at 33 to form the inner wall of the ring and the edges of the fabric be modified to form efficient gas seals therewith (Figs. 5 to 8, not shown); or the fabric wall 33 may be continued upwards externally over the connectors to be clamped to the roof at 19 (Fig. 9, not shown).
