Abstract

882,723. Sliding doors. BECKETT, LAYCOCK & WATKINSON Ltd. Sept. 17, 1958 [June 26, 1957], No. 20222/57. Class 20(3) [Also in Group XXXII] A sliding door 31, Figs. 4 and 5, is mounted in a doorway by a pair of links 16, 30 pivoted by stub axles 23 to brackets 18 secured outside the door along its upper edge 19 and pivoted by slit axles 22 to brackets 17 secured to a runner 11 having ball bearings 12 engaging in a track 13 carried by the wall 14, the link 16 having a pair of lugs 27 between which is mounted a jockey wheel 26 engageable with a cam track 28 on the wall 14 below the track 13 whereby during the opening movement of the door to the right in Fig. 5, the wheel 26 engages a current portion 29 of the track 28 to cause the door to be moved transversely out of the doorway to thereafter assume the position shown in dotted lines as it moves parallel to the body. Springs 21 on the stub axles 22 return the door to the position shown in full lines when the door is moved from the open to the closed position. The bottom edge of the door is provided with a pair of castors each having a shaft engaging in a bush on the door and urged downwardly by a spring whereby the castor engages a guiding rail. Each rail at one end is curved inwardly to allow of the transverse movement of the door. In another embodiment the brackets 18 are provided on the inside of the door 31. In a further embodiment the link 16 is provided with a pair of wheels, one above the other and engaging separate cam tracks, the upper wheel and track causing the movement of the door away from the doorway whilst the lower wheel and track cause the door to be positively moved back into the doorway during the closing movement, all as described with reference to Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown).
