Abstract

Yarn comprising continuous synthetic filaments of highly crystalline high molecular weight polymers of a-olefins having the formula CH2=CHR in which R is an alkyl group, e.g. polypropylene, is bulked by successive subjection to a stretching operation at a temperature of 20-80 DEG C. with a stretch ratio of 1:2,5-1:5,5 and at a feed rate of 30-150 metres per minute, and a sudden thermal treatment for from a few seconds up to ten minutes at a temperature of 50 DEG C. up to the melting point of the filaments. The oriented crystalline yarn product retains its original tenacity and has permanent crimps randomly distributed along its length.
