Abstract

881,957. Making tubes; welding by pressure. MORSBACH, P. July 25, 1958 [July 25, 1957], No. 23978/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In producing a welded tube one or a pair of continuous incoming metallic strips are formed to a non-circular gapped cross-section consisting of two flat sides and semi-circular end parts with a gap in one or each end part and the gap or gaps are subsequently closed by welding. In an embodiment strip material 10 shaped to flat sided 20, 21 and semi-circular ended 18, 19 gapped tube section is fed between electrode rollers 11, 12 which apply current to the upper parts of the flat sides 20, 21 and then between pressure rollers 13, 14 which press on the flat sides to close the gap at the weld point 15 located between the two sets of rollers. The current which may be direct current in pulse form flows in path 17. The welded tube may be shaped to round section subsequently by rolls exerting pressure on the semi-circular ends or by expanders. The tube may be formed from two shaped iron or steel strips.
