900,317. Making tubes; drawing; angular bending; welding by pressure. MORSBACH, P. Jan. 20, 1959 [Jan. 21, 1958; Nov. 5, 1958], No. 2076/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In making longitudinal seamwelded tubes from continuous strip, the strip is formed into a split oval section and the section is closed by welding and passed through a die to be given the required shape. A strip 2, Fig. 1, e.g. aluminium or steel, from a reel 1 passes through edge trimmers 8, feed rolls 9, dies 10, 11, 12 shaped as shown in Figs. 3 to 5, resistance welding rollers 13, a deburring die 14, a circular die 15 and feed rolls 16. Additional finishing dies and a cut off mechanism may be provided. In a modification, two strips are passed by rolls 23, 24, Fig. 9, through opposed U- shaped openings 26, 27, Fig. 10, in a die 25, a pair of roller electrodes 29, 30 supplying welding current, a welding die 28 having a rectangular opening or a pair of welding rollers, and a die 31 which gives the tube its required shapes. The dies may have chromium-plated sliding surfaces. The dies preceding the welding station may be replaced by rollers. Instead of feed rolls, a conveyer 17, Fig. 8, having magnets 18 may traverse the strip or strips. Oval tubes produced in this manner may be rendered circular on site by applying a high interior pressure.
