829,377. Pipe end closing; forming the ends of metal tubes. B.T.S. INVESTMENTS Ltd., [formerly BOULTON TUBULAR STRUCTURES Ltd.]. June 23, 1958 [June 22, 1957], No. 19718/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of flattening welded metal tube comprises partially flattening the tube or a portion thereof between at least one pair of press or like tools, subsequently completing the flattening in another pair of tools and compressing the welded seam during both flattening operations which are performed at room or atmospheric temperature. A fixed lower tool 1 is longer than a reciprocable top tool 2 and has an upwardly-extending guide plate 3 fixed to each of its projecting ends. In the example shown, two parallel channels 4 and 5 are formed in the upper tool and in addition a cutting-edge 6 is disposed on an unchannelled flattening surface midway between and parallel to the tool ends while a complementary cutting edge 7 is provided on the lower tool. The widths of the channels 4 and 5 are respectively two-thirds and the external diameter of the tube to be flattened. The tube 9 is placed with the seam 8 uppermost in the guides 3 on the lower tool beneath the channels 4 and 5 and the cutting edge 6, respectively for successive strokes of the upper tool which produce two partial reductions and a final flattening and shearing operation.
