Abstract
913,354. Making tubes; welding by pressure. SONNICHSEN, A. Sept. 30, 1959, No. 33139/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In making a resistance-welded metal tube a strip is brought to tubular form, the seam is welded by current passing transversely of the abutting edges thereof, the welding bulge is removed and a further current to anneal the tube is passed longitudinally along the welded seam between roller electrodes spaced along the path of the tube, each electrode engaging the seam. Steel strip 1 is fed between rotary knives 2 to cut the edges off the strip and then to a rolling mill 3 in which it is shaped to an open tube. The tube is then welded between pressure rollers 10 above which an insulated pair of electrodes 12, 13 is pressed against the tube so that current flows from one electrode to the other across the pressed together seam. Weld flash is removed by a knife 5 and the welded tube passes to a set of four electrodes 6, each contacting the welded seam which pass current longitudinally of the tube while rollers 16, 17 exert side pressure. The tube finally passes through a calibrating machine 7. The mill 3, electrodes 6 and device 7 can be used alone to manufacture tubes of poorer quality.
