Abstract
880,699. Handling liquid cargoes. QUADE, M. N., DOUGLAS, W. S., HEDEFINE, A., BICKEL, J. O., ZIEGENFELDER, R. F., and BRUCE, W. H., [trading as PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF, HALL & MACDONALD] and SHIERY, E. S. March 9, 1959 [April 16, 1958], No. 8082/59. Class 78 (4). Two hingedly-connected powered booms 20, 22, supporting flexible piping which connects stationary shore piping with the manifold of a tanker or other movable connection terminate in an outer articulated portion 24. As shown, the coupling end 26 of pipe 14 is supported from an arm 24 which can be swung about a pivot 25 by a rope 46 passed round a driving pulley 51. Lateral movement, transversely of the boom, is allowed by a trolley 29 running on an I-beam 27. The boom 22 is swung about its hinge 23 on the boom 20 by ropes 39 and the boom 20 is swung about its hinge 21 by tackle 33. The boom 20 supports a rigid pipe 11 which is in turn connected to a swivel joint 12. The device may support several pipes 11, 14 side by side. In a modification the arm 24 can be swung directly by attached cables. A swivel joint (not shown) may be used at the coupling end 26 and the boom 22 may extend or retract telescopically; the arm 24 can then be omitted. The rigid pipe 11 and the flexible pipe 14 may be replaced by a single flexible pipe supported at its centre by a hoist suspended from the hinge 23, the swivel joint being used at the coupling end.
